My Purpose

Please allow me to reiterate at the end of this chapter what I said at the beginning: the weight of damage done to emotional health by childhood abuse can seem overwhelming. My purpose in discussing these emotional impacts is certainly not to contribute to an impression that overcoming childhood abuse is impossible. I retain my strong faith in the resiliency of the human spirit, the redemptive power of faith, the restorative power of forgiveness, and the reaffirming power of love. My purpose is to bring to light the emotional damage possible from childhood abuse so that those of you who suffer will understand you are not to blame.

An additional purpose is to bring to light difficulties you may be experiencing in your life for which you have been unable to determine a cause. It is my hope that, after reading through these possible effects, you are able to discover a link between some confounding behaviors you experience now to trauma or abuse in your past. And, having identified such a potential connection, you will find motivation to explore additional ways to recover and create change.
